VISIT FULTON COUNTY

Fulton County , Kentucky is the furthermost western county in Kentucky.  The county is bordered to the north and west by the great Mississippi River and to the south by the state of Tennessee.

Hickman, the seat of Fulton County, is located on five bluffs above the Mississippi River at the junction of KY 94 and KY 125. The town was once called Mills Point, in honor of James Mills, who settled on a military grant in 1819. In 1837 the name of the settlement was changed to Hickman, the maiden name of the wife of G.W.L. Marr, who had once owned the town site among his extensive landholdings. The river trade helped make Hickman a thriving town. In 1845 some 2,000 bales of cotton and 3,000 hogsheads of tobacco were shipped from the community. In 1845, with a population of 350, Hickman was chosen as the county seat of Fulton County. A brick courthouse overlooking the Mississippi River was completed in 1848 at a cost of $4,000. It was replaced in 1903 by an eclectic- style brick courthouse. Hickman’s status as a port lessened because of deposits along the Mississippi River, which made navigation close to the town more difficult. Dredging of the river by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers helped to ensure that Hickman had a permanent harbor, and by the late 1960s river traffic increased. In the mid-1970s, improvements were made to the city’s public cargo handling terminal, which was of major importance to the region.
